High School Students Achieve National First in Chromebook Repair Certification

By Marin Galvin, CTIA - The Wireless Association

Imagine a classroom filled with eager minds, not just absorbing knowledge but actively engaged in supporting the momentum of digital learning through Chromebook repair. This is the reality for a group of high school students from Operation Breakthrough’s Ignition Lab in Kansas City who have made history by becoming the first class in the nation to receive WISE Chromebook Level 2 certification.

This remarkable feat is a testament to a collaborative effort between Operation Breakthrough, iResQ, and WISE Certification. iResQ, a leading provider of device repair and asset management, partnered with Operation Breakthrough’s Ignition Lab to develop a unique curriculum that equips students with the skills to diagnose and repair Chromebook hardware.

The recent surge in digital equity initiatives, fueled by pandemic-era funding, has highlighted the need for sustainable technology solutions in the classroom. As federal funds dwindle, schools are grappling with the challenge of preserving devices that keep their students connected. With the damage of these devices often user-inflicted and primarily minor, iResQ recognizes that with proper training, schools can establish cost-effective student repair labs, fostering vocational skills, and extending the lifespan of valuable devices.

iResQ has a proven track record in supporting K-12 schools by providing reliable and efficient mobile device repair services. As a long-standing partner to countless school districts, iResQ understands the critical role technology plays in modern education and the challenges schools face in maintaining these digital learning environments.

“A third of our business is Chromebooks from across the country,” iResQ Co-Owner and CEO Michelle Crosby. “... The hope is that this program will enable schools to train their students to do this on their own on site. Then, the more difficult repairs, they can ship off if needed”

By partnering with organizations like WISE and Ignition Labs, iResQ empowers both the students and the school with some much-needed computer repair skills.

"We are incredibly proud of our students for achieving this national first," said Michelle Crosby, iResQ. "With WISE certification, they not only have an opportunity to support their community’s repair needs, but they now have a valuable credential that will open doors to future opportunities for them in the tech industry."

Ignition Lab serves at-risk teens who often live in economically depressed neighborhoods, providing them opportunities to acquire work skills, experience, internships, and industry- recognized credentials in STEM subjects, including electronic device repair. With tens of thousands, if not millions, of educational devices throughout multiple school districts all over the U.S., this program addresses the growing need to keep those devices in good operating condition, but also empowers young minds to become active participants in the ever-evolving world of technology.

WISE, which stands for Wireless Industry Service Excellence, is the industry recognized standard for retailers and technicians performing device repair. This global program delivers comprehensive knowledge and hands-on training along with certification aimed to equip technicians and students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the fast-evolving world of mobile device technology.

"WISE is not just training; it's a vehicle to help ignite the next generation of tech-savvy problem solvers. By empowering students with the skills to repair devices, we’re not only supporting a skilled workforce but also fostering a culture of sustainability and innovation within the consumer electronics industry,” CTIA Vice President of Strategic Industry Programs Michelle James.

Guided by the repair experts at iResQ, the students at Ignition Lab demonstrated a deep understanding of Chromebook components and the ability to perform complex repairs, becoming the first to achieve industry-recognized Level 2 certification in Chromebook repair.

The importance of this achievement cannot be overstated. Technology plays an increasingly vital role in our lives, and the ability to troubleshoot and repair those devices that keep our students connected is a valuable skill set. This program enables students not only with technical expertise but also with the confidence and problem-solving abilities that are essential for success in the 21st-century workforce.

The challenges of sustaining technological advancement in education are formidable, but the collaboration between Operation Breakthrough, iResQ, and WISE Certification prove partnerships and innovation are key to supporting the full potential of connected learning. With the support of the wireless industry, and backing of industry recognized credentials, these students can feel empowered to build their own tech support teams, repair depot centers, and advance down supporting career-exploration tracks.

As for these history-making students, this is just the beginning. With their newfound skills and certifications, they are well-positioned to pursue exciting careers in the tech field, shaping the future of innovation. The industry contributors who helped build the WISE Program are proud of this inaugural graduating class. Thanks to Operation Breakthrough and iResQ for the amazing partnership.
