Corporate donors, with help from employees, offer hope to children and families affected by hurricanes

Hi there,

Since Hurricane Milton made landfall last week, World Vision’s disaster response teams have been on the ground in Florida, adding to our ongoing response to Hurricane Helene across multiple states. At the same time, corporate partners--and their employees--have been stepping up to help.

THE SITUATION

In Florida, nearly 400,000 remain without power. Milton’s landfall marked the 6th time in history that Florida had three hurricanes make landfall in a single year.

In North Carolina, nearly 100,000 people remain without clean water as of October 13. 12,000 are still without power. Many schools are out until at least the end of the month, creating concerns about learning gaps.

OUR RESPONSE SO FAR

Currently, efforts are focused on cleanup and providing relief supplies to affected families. Once cleanup has progressed, building supplies will be a vital need. The change in temperature as the season adjusts is a worry, as many still don't have electricity to heat their homes.

World Vision CEO Edgar Sandoval visited North Carolina and Florida over the weekend to assess the situation, meet with partners, and offer assurances of World Vision's long-term support in the relief efforts.

Hurricane Helene:

  • Thirteen trucks filled with relief supplies have been dispatched to nine partners across FL, GA, SC, and NC. This product was either donated in advance by corporate partners or purchased through cash donations.
  • A $24,000 cash grant has been awarded to local partner St. John Baptist in Arden, NC to help with relief operations.
  • $10,000 worth of tools have been provided to Asheville Dream Center to help with cleanup.
  • Over 15,000 people have already received critical supplies, including food, water, hygiene products, and generators. We expect this number to rise as relief efforts continue.

Hurricane Milton:

  • Thirteen trucks filled with relief supplies have been dispatched to 13 local partners to help provide relief in hard hit areas.
  • Over 1,000 crisis relief boxes were distributed over the weekend in Florida.
  • Over 16,500 individuals have received relief supplies; more will be reached in the coming days.

Your company can support children and families affected by disasters in the U.S.:

  • Give Cash: Cash is used to purchase items, like clean water, that are in short supply. It is also used to provide freight and support for donated products, allowing us to deliver donated goods to children and families who need them the most. You can give directly here, or respond to this email to contact a corporate engagement representative.
  • Start a Fundraising Campaign: Raise support from your employees or customers through a cobranded fundraising page (example). Or consider a Point of Sale (POS) or roundup campaign.
  • Donate Product: Bottled water, generators, hygiene supplies and other immediate response items are needed in the near term. Long term, the need will shift to building supplies as we help families rebuild their housing... and their lives. In addition, our response to this hurricane has diminished our supply of pre-positioned goods for the next disaster, and our store needs to be resupplied.

Partner Story: Ace Hardware & Employees Come Together to Provide Hope

One of our partners, Ace Hardware, rallied employees to donate and build 1,000 relief buckets that will be sent to help survivors of Hurricanes Helene and Milton.

These buckets include vital hurricane clean-up items such as cleaning products, gloves, scrub brushes, dust masks, contractor bags, and more providing crucial aid for families on the path to recovery.

So many employees stepped forward to volunteer for the October 15th build at their Oak Brook, IL headquarters that they had to create a waitlist.

In addition to these buckets, Ace Hardware has already donated another 200 buckets, as well as other much-needed supplies such as rakes, shovels, and wheelbarrows to support World Vision's relief efforts.
